On February 9, 2025, Singapore Immanuel Church held its Sunday Service.
Pastor Deborah delivered a sermon based on Romans 8:14-17, titled “Now if We Are Children, We Are Heirs of God.” Believers should have the unshakeable identity of being children of God, called to live by the Holy Spirit with Jesus Christ at the center of their lives. As Romans 8:15 goes on to explain, in living as children of God undergoing sanctification, it is not a process of despair or bondage but one filled with great hope to live as sons of God.
There is a clear difference between living as a slave to sin and living as a son of God. The slave has no power to overcome their sins, living in fear of the punishment to come and days ahead with no hope. However, the son of God already knows their debts of sins have been fully paid, thus they enjoy the full benefits of being children of God as listed in Romans 5:1-5, able to look forward to life overflowing with the work of Holy Spirit to bear fruits of love and joy (Galatians 5:22-23).
During times of doubt, believers were encouraged to return to the Word, particularly the book of Romans, to be firmly convicted of their identity in God’s truth. Apostle Paul also goes on to explain that the journey of sanctification is not about living for personal circumstances alone; rather, as Romans 8:17 continues, all children of God are heirs who share both in Christ’s glory and His suffering.
Those who are born again by the Spirit, recognize their identity as children of God that they no longer live for themselves, but to live with Christ in their hearts. Living with Jesus Christ, they will persevere in sanctification, recognizing that beyond just enjoying life in their personal circle, the greatest joy and glory to be shared together with God is to participate in His Kingdom.
Attendees were urged to examine their faith, ensuring they clearly understand their identity and the life to which they are called. They were encouraged to renew their direction in following Jesus and His Kingdom. May God continue to pour out the Holy Spirit upon the church, leading believers into daily renewal and sanctification, and transforming them to be God’s co-workers for His Kingdom.
